FLY LITTLE BIRDY /// by May Sumbwanyambe & Rasmus Zwicki
Performed in Saint George the Martyr Church by soprano Delphine Mégret with Ben Smith, Robert Reid Allan and Rasmus Zwicki on melodicas and toy glockenspiels.
Composed by Rasmus Zwicki
Lyrics by May Sumbwanyambe
I:
Fly little birdy fly,
fly with all my love.
Fly my little birdy fly,
soaring high above.
II:
All the birds, flying.
And the Graffiti on the walls.
Mum says she wishes the whole building was torn down.
Mum says she wishes it was nothing but rubble and…
But I would miss my friends,
all the birds flying,
and the graffiti on the walls.
III:
The big blue one,
it was my favourite:
A mother bird, feeding her chicks.
I said to Mother it will be alright.
But she wouldn’t stop crying.
“FUCKING SLAGS” written in bright red,
across my birds, my favourite mother bird.
Mum says she wishes the whole building was torn down.
Mum says she wishes it was nothing but rubble and…
IV:
He says to her “Because you are weak. Because I’m strong”.
I was next door.
V:
Lying there on the floor
she looks dead
beautiful
puts her arms around me.
They left the outside door open.
Lying there.
The other tower block,
it looks just like ours.
They left the outside door…
We’re just lying there,
still
like dead birds.
